After completing his Bachelors in music education at Kent State University, Michael Stephens directed middle school bands, maintained a private woodwind studio, and played saxophone professionally in jazz, rock, and blues bands throughout Northeast Ohio for ten years. His original jazz fusion group, Osmosis, released two self-produced CDs across their eight-year tenure, and opened for Spyro Gyra, Chuck Mangione, Marion Meadows, and Blood, Sweat and Tears. Stephens earned his Masters in music composition at Kent State University, and his PhD in music composition and theory from the University of Pittsburgh. His orchestral piece, Oakland Overture, was performed by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, and Shards of Frozen Ecstasy, for alto saxophone and piano, premiered at the North American Saxophone Alliance convention in 2006. Commissions include works for the Duquesne Contemporary Ensemble (Pittsburgh), Alia Musica (Pittsburgh), and the Roberts Middle School Band (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio). Dr. Stephens joined the faculty at Chadron State College as an Assistant Professor of Music in the fall of 2007, where he teaches music theory, composition, private instruction on woodwinds, and directs the Jazz Ensemble. Stephens performs regularly with the CSC Professors of Jazz and has been active as a clinician and judge in Nebraska, South Dakota, and Wyoming. Michael lives in Chadron with his wonderful wife, Lauren, and his two precious little girls, Alyssa and Chelsea.
